Now I’d like to explain the expression “take advantage of”. “Take advantage of” can have both negative and positive connotations. James is obviously using the negative form when he says:

  • Well, it’s certainly not our intention to take advantage of you.

The meaning here is, “We don’t want to abuse your kindness or exploit your willingness to negotiate with us.” Another example might be:

  • They took advantage of our kindness and tried to get even more from us.

However, the same expression can have an entirely different meaning when placed in another context.
For example,

  • Let’s take advantage of our extra day in New York to visit some of the sites.

Or,

  • We should take advantage of the region’s fine cuisine to have a business lunch.

In both cases, “taking advantage of” is something positive for everyone involved.
